CONTEXT
Bringing physical and emotional aspects back to music.
Music once lived in physical artifacts: record players, cassette decks, and early portable devices - listening involved both sound and touch. Nowadays, people feel detached from music and listen passively.
This capstone project examines the integration of physical elements with modern streaming technology.
USER RESEARCH
Understanding avid music listeners’ preferences and experiences.
User research included interviews with avid music listeners (10 interviewees) and a Qualtrics survey (26 participants) to understand their music habits and preferences.
How might we enhance at-home music streaming for music enthusiasts by incorporating physical interaction, creating an immersive and intentional experience?
MARKET RESEARCH
Opportunity for music customization and physical interaction.
DESIGN CRITERIA
Defining product design criteria based on user and market insights.
PHYSICAL MODEL
Final handmade model!
Lots of 3D printing trial and error (not pictured), hours of sanding, laser cutting, spray painting, and problem solving! Not all aspects of the process were photographed, but most steps are pictured in a simplified manner.
FINAL DESIGN: INTRODUCING BEOSOUND HALO
IDEATION
Guided by criteria, ideation varied in functionality, form, size, and aesthetics.
As my ideation progressed, I converged to forms that included circular displays (for a warm touch) combined with a rectangular, sturdy speaker base. 2 concepts were chosen to prototype and assess with users.
PROTOTYPING & FEEDBACK
Exploring product dimensions, form, and function.
Gathering product preferences and insights from 6 users (based on ideation and prototypes).
BRANDING & REFINEMENT
Nailing the design language. Refining display UI, controls, materiality, and more.
